Studio Joost Vermeulen (SJV) is a creative interior design studio that finds innovative ways to meld the past with the future using non-traditional methods and materials. Since it’s inception in 1999, SJV has demonstrated a unique vision in weaving together the various aspects of design - the space, audience, client needs, timeframe, and budget - and in telling that story in innovative ways. Joost’s passion for combining aesthetic with utility allows him to smoothly translate his creative vision into reality.  

SJV ensures a high quality product in various capacities - supervisory, advisory, consultancy - and in partnership with artists, advertisers, and furniture makers. It prides itself on its willingness and ability to buck the norm with powerful, distinctive, authentic, solutions that separate SJV from the competition. It is able to deliver on this promise through constantly seeking and uncovering a rich knowledge of opportunities, sources of inspiration, and collaboration with other specialists.

 

About JOOST VERMEULEN

Joost Vermeulen is a Dutch interior designer with almost 20 years of experience and an extensive portfolio of work ranging from luxury home renovations and large-scale public art collaborations, to boutiques and corporate offices. He recently moved from his home city of Amsterdam, NL to Santa Monica California after spending a significant time traveling in the US and throughout Europe, being inspired by diverse landscapes, cultures, art, furniture, boutique hotels, and architecture, as well as by other world-class designers and architects. 

His friendly attitude and enthusiastic attention to detail enable him to work with a wide range of clients, partners, and collaborators.  He frequently works with internationally renowned Dutch artist Jennifer Tee, with whom he has collaborated on a variety of projects including a permanent art piece to be housed in the Amsterdam Central Train Station (currently on temporary exhibit at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam) and a Darwin-inspired ceramic wall installation in Cambridge, UK. He has supported Jennifer's art exhibits at various international museums, galleries, and art exhibitions, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, NL, and the San Paolo Biennale , BR. Their most recent collaboration is a set of beautiful Tulip Tiles, now on sale at the Rijksmuseum and the W Hotel's X Bank concept store, both in Amsterdam.

Joost was previously a partner in ROAM Architects, where he offered the creative vision and interior design for projects he managed with Architect Bruce Kee.  

He spent 4 years in formal training for Architectural Design at St. Joost's Academy of Art after completing a business degree at Redichem College, in Oosterbeek, NL and an art school preparatory course at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Utrecht, NL.
